Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we get asked most about extensions, driveways, patios and working with us.

About Us

Where are you based and which areas do you cover?

We’re based in Chelmsford and work across most of Essex, including Writtle, Danbury, Maldon, Witham, Braintree, Billericay, Brentwood and Basildon. See all the areas we cover.

Are you a family business?

Yes. M&J Construction was started in 1997 by Mark and his dad Jim, and today it’s run by Mark and his son Garrat. That’s three generations of the same family. You can meet the owners or read our history.

What are your working hours?

We’re open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Quotes, Drawings and Planning

Do you give free quotes?

Yes. We’ll come out for a free site visit, talk through what you want and then give you a clear written quote, so you know exactly what’s included.

Do you do the drawings and planning application?

Yes. Our team includes an architect and a planning consultant, so we can draw up your project, check whether you need planning permission and handle the application for you. See architecture and planning.

Do I need planning permission for an extension?

Not always. Many single storey rear extensions can be built under permitted development, as long as they stay within certain limits. Read our guide: do I need planning permission for an extension?

How long will my project take?

It depends on the size of the job and whether planning is needed. We’ll give you a timescale with your quote and keep you updated as the work goes on.

Driveways and Patios

Do you lay resin or tarmac driveways?

No. We specialise in block paving driveways and porcelain and sandstone patios, built on a proper dug-out sub-base.

Do you put in dropped kerbs?

No. A dropped kerb onto the road has to be applied for through Essex Highways and done by one of their approved contractors. We’ll lay your driveway and work around their timetable.

Should I choose porcelain or sandstone for my patio?

Porcelain is harder wearing and lower maintenance, while sandstone has a softer, more traditional look. Our guide to porcelain or sandstone patios goes through the pros and cons.
