Meet the Owners
A Family Business, Three Generations
M&J Construction is run by father and son, Mark and Garrat. But the story starts with Mark’s dad, Jim.
Jim worked as a garage erector for Marley Buildings, then moved to Chelmsford Council as a bricklayer. He then came on board to help Mark set up M&J, and between them they built the business up from cutting grass to full building work.
Jim, Mark and now Garrat. Three generations, built on reputation.
Mark, Founder
Mark started M&J with his dad, Jim, which is where the M and the J come from. Before that he worked for Chelmsford Council.
The two of them started out cutting grass and doing basic landscaping, and over the years that grew into driveways, hard landscaping and eventually the construction company we are today.
Garrat, Partner
Garrat is Mark’s son and started working alongside his dad from a young age, learning the trade and the family business.
He then spent time at Topps Tiles, learning the basics of tiling and slab laying while building up his customer service skills. After that he changed direction and joined a car parts manufacturer, where he became their Sales and Development Manager. All the while he kept working with Mark on tiling and general building jobs.
In the end he decided the family business mattered more, joined Mark full time and became a partner in M&J Construction.
