Driveways and patios are where M&J started back in 1997, so it’s fair to say we’ve laid a few. Here’s our honest take on the most popular options and what to think about before you choose.
Block paving
Block paving is still one of the most popular choices for driveways round here, and for good reason. It’s hard-wearing, it comes in loads of colours and patterns, and if a block ever gets damaged it can be lifted and replaced without digging up the whole drive.
The key is what goes underneath. We always do a full dig out and lay a proper compacted sub-base before the sand and blocks go down. Skip that and you’ll get dips and sunken blocks within a few years.
Porcelain
Porcelain has become a favourite for patios. It’s tough, it doesn’t stain easily, it needs very little looking after and it gives a clean, modern finish that works well with bi-fold doors.
Sandstone
If you want something more natural and traditional, sandstone is hard to beat. Every slab is slightly different, which gives a lovely look, especially with older houses and cottage gardens. It does need a bit more care than porcelain to keep it looking its best.
Gravel
Gravel is one of the most affordable options, it drains well and the crunch underfoot is good for security. Edging it with setts or blocks keeps it in place and gives a smart finish.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Usually not, as long as you use the right materials. Under the current rules in England, you don’t need planning permission for a front driveway if it’s permeable, like gravel or permeable block paving, or if the rainwater runs off into a lawn or border.
If you want a solid, non-permeable surface covering more than 5 square metres of your front garden and the water has nowhere to drain, you will need planning permission. We’ll tell you which way your job falls when we come out.
Dropped kerbs
If you’re creating a new driveway where there isn’t one already, you’ll need a dropped kerb to drive over the pavement legally. That has to be applied for through the council, so it’s worth sorting early.
